We're in the Pink!

The Mushroom Pink Punnet campaign, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month raised R 414,473.00 for breast cancer support group Reach for Recovery (R4R) during October 2013. Over the 4 years of this initiative between the South African Mushroom Farmers’ Association (SAMFA) and Pick n Pay just over R1, 5million has been collected to sustain the work of R4R.

 

“It is with great pride and gratitude ,” said SAMFA chairperson Ross Richardson at a celebratory breakfast this morning, “that we support the community outreach work that these remarkable R4R volunteers - all breast cancer survivors – do every day of the year. And we are thrilled to announce that this 4-year old partnership between ourselves and Pick n Pay, supported by thousands of generous South Africans who purchase mushrooms in pink punnets during October, has raised a total of over R1, 5million over the period.

Mushrooms raise in excess of R1 000 000 for reach for recovery to add some real muscle to the breast cancer fight

Mushrooms in South Africa first turned pink on supermarket shelves in October 2010 when SAMFA joined forces with Pick ‘n Pay and Yucca Packaging to help raise national awareness of breast cancer during October’s Breast Cancer awareness month. In total over the past 36 months, mushrooms have raised over R1 000 000.00 for breast cancer support group Reach for Recovery. (R232 524.00 in 2010; R380 620.00 in 2011 and R570 668.00 in 2012)

It was wooden spoons at the ready, as 5 finalists don their aprons to show off their kitchen skills as they competed for the best young chef competition during the 2011 Rising stars.

 

The judges were treated to easy to make, tasty dishes that showcased more versatility and flavour of the fresh cultivated mushrooms. After tough battle and debates, Mahlatse Madimabe of Culinary Passions School of  Hospitality with her incredible dish Mushroom and Chicken Liver Tart was crowned the overall winner of the competition.  Mahlatse won herself a trophy and a whooping R4000.00 in cash; she proved her love for cooking and the passion that she has that drives her to work hard at what she does.
